What is the story behind the movie A Man Called Otto? ›

A Man Called Otto is a dark drama with some moments of light relief. It's about a man who is 'very bad at dying', having unsuccessfully attempted suicide on many occasions. But Otto's life is given new meaning when a young family moves in next door to him and manages to change his life.

There are some funny scenes/lines, but it's a very serious movie in many aspects, very much a dramady. It deals with mental health issues like loneliness, loss and depression in a sensitive manner. The acting is good with Tom Hanks giving his usual outstanding performance.

Filming began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in February 2022 and wrapped up in three months later in May.
