On May 22, 2020, Merced released her debut EP, The Better Half of Me, through Republic Records and was named one of Billboard's top 15 new Peruvian artists to listen to in July 2020. In 2024, she starred in Turtles All the Way Down, a film adaptation of the 2017 novel by John Green, and Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus.

In 2019, seven years into her career, Merced announced she was changing her stage name from Isabela Moner to Isabela Merced as an homage to her maternal grandmother, Yolanda Merced Salazar. "This is when I begin writing my own story," she said then.

Like her character Dora, Moner loves to explore, especially when she visits Peru. Her mother Katherine is from Lima, Peru, and her father Patrick is from Louisiana.

And on that family note, even though Isabela has never met her grandmother, she told Refinery29 she feels very connected to her grandmother's spirit — hence wanting to identify with it by taking on the last name Merced. "She was a force of nature, unafraid of anything," Isabela explained.
